The Columbian Fountain

The Santa Maria

Frederick MacMonnies was entrusted with the design and construction of the central fountain at the Fair, and $50,000 were placed at his disposal for the purpose. The fountain shows Columbia sitting aloft of the Barge of State, heralded by Fame at the prow blowing a trumpet, oared by the Arts and Industries, guided by Time at the helm, and drawn by the sea-horses of Commerce. The rowers on the port side (left) are Agriculture, Science, Industry, and Commerce; on the starboard side are Music, Architecture, Sculpture, and Painting.

Time has improvised a helm by using his scythe. This barge stands in the center of a circular basin, one hundred and fifty feet in diameter. It is the centerpiece of the Court of Honor at the eastern end of the Grand Basin. -- The Dream City

The Court of Honor, behind the fountain, was a busy thoroughfare and popular meeting-place. The two photos above are among only a few taken by Father Peter that include children.
