"We believe that monastic communities that prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and demonstrate their love for Christ by preferring nothing to the Work of God, will enable the Japanese people to appreciate the profoundly religious core of the Christian tradition."

Saint John's Abbey

Father Anthony Gorman OSB

Anthony-"Tony"-Gorman came to Saint John's from Currie, Minnesota. He entered the monastery in 1984 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1990. He earned an advanced degree in library science from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his doctorate in theology at Notre Dame. He has served as a pastoral minister, librarian, editor, and assistant guestmaster. [His pastoral ministry has included time as an associate pastor in the Crookston diocese, as well as service as weekend assistant, spiritual director, retreat director, and chaplain team member for several communities in and away from Minnesota.] Tony's subtle sense of humor and gentle manner belie his intensity. He completed Grandma's Marathon in Duluth in June 2006.

In the fall of 2006 Tony moved to Trinity Benedictine Monastery, Fujimi, Japan. He uses almost exclusively his nickname name in Japan because "Tony" is easy for Japanese speakers to pronounce. In Japan he has served both the Japanese- and English-speaking faith communities. In March 2009, thanks to the generosity of the Benedictine Sisters in Japan, Tony became priest-in-residence at St. Benedict Monastery, Muroran, Hokkaido. He is continuing his study of Japanese at the Muroran Institute of Technology in preparation for returning to Fujimi.
