"We believe that monastic communities that prefer nothing whatever to Christ, and demonstrate their love for Christ by preferring nothing to the Work of God, will enable the Japanese people to appreciate the profoundly religious core of the Christian tradition."

Saint John's Abbey

Father Cyril Gorman OSB

Father Cyril came to Saint John's from Currie, Minnesota. He entered the monastery in 1984 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1990. He earned an advanced degree in library science from the University of Pittsburgh and completed his doctorate in theology at Notre Dame.

His subtle sense of humor and gentle manner belie his reputation as a fierce competitor. He completed Grandma's Marathon in Duluth in June 2006. In the fall of 2006 Father Cyril moved to Trinity Benedictine Monastery, Fujimi, Japan. Cyril uses his baptismal name at Fujimi because "Tony" is easier for Japanese speakers to pronounce. He is learning Japanese, serves as assistant guestmaster, and ministers to both the Japanese and the English-speaking Philippine communities.
