Saint John's Abbey

Father Hilary Thimmesh OSB

Born and raised in Osakis, Minnesota, Father Hilary professed monastic vows at Saint John's Abbey in 1948 and was ordained a priest in 1954. He has been a member of the Saint John's English department since receiving his doctorate at Cornell University in 1963. Father Hilary's career has been a blend of teaching and administration. For a time he served as administrator of St. Martin's Abbey, Lacey, Washington, and he was President of Saint John's University for two terms.

Most recently he has taught Shakespeare and edited the 190-page book of essays and photographs, Saint John's at 150, that was published in 2006 to mark the beginning of Saint John's Sesquicentennial celebration. Father Hilary is a gifted writer whose homilies are often sprinkled with literary allusions.
