Benedictine Monks Celebrate 25 Years of Monastic Life

COLLEGEVILLE, MINN. — The monks of Saint John's Abbey mentioned below mark a Silver Jubilee of Monastic Profession. The monastery will celebrate with them and the older jubilarians marking 60 and 50 years of religious life at a festive liturgy on Sunday, July 11, 2004, the Solemnity of Saint Benedict, Patriarch of Western Monasticism.

25 Years a Monk * 1979-2004

Father Timothy Backous OSB
Father Timothy Backous OSB was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota, 4 June 1953. He professed vows on 11 July 1979 and was ordained a priest on 27 September 1986. Father Timo serves as Athletic Director and Coordinator of Faculty Residents for Saint John's University.

Brother Paul Richards OSB
Brother Paul Richards OSB was born in Virginia, Minnesota, on 6 September 1955. He professed monastic vows on 11 July 1979. Brother Paul founded the Saint John's Boys' Choir and serves as Subprior of Saint John's Abbey.

Father Gregory Sebastian OSB
Father Gregory Sebastian OSB was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 22 September 1920. He professed vows on 11 July 1979 and was ordained a priest on 4 June 1983. Father Gregory, a specialist in Classical Languages from Columbia University, NY, is retired from the Hill Museum and Manuscript Library.

Brother Douglas Mullin OSB
Brother Douglas Mullin OSB was born in Laredo, Texas, on 30 September 1954. He professed monastic vows on 11 July 1979. Brother Doug is an Assistant Professor of Education at Saint John's University. Brother Doug recently began studies for ordination to the priesthood.

Father Luke Mancuso OSB
Father Luke Mancuso OSB was born in Lake Charles, Louisiana, on 17 November 1956. He professed vows on 15 August 1979 and was ordained a priest on 11 June 1983. Father Luke is an Assistant Professor of English at Saint John's University writing about Walt Whitman and teaching the critique of contemporary media.
