Jubilarians Celebrate Anniversaries of Monastic Profession in July 2005

COLLEGEVILLE, MINN. The monks of Saint John's Abbey listed below mark a significant milestone of their lives as monks in the summer of 2005. The monastery will celebrate with them at a festive liturgy at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, July 11, 2005, the Solemnity of Saint Benedict, Patriarch of Western Monasticism and Co-Patron of Europe. Abbot John lauded the jubilarians in his homily at mass.
Seventy Years
Father Mark Henry Schneider OSB Father Mark Schneider OSB celebrates seventy years of monastic profession. He was born on July 19, 1914, in Rice Lake, Wisconsin, and professed first vows on July 11, 1935. Father Mark spent most of his active life either teaching in the Preparatory School or as a chaplain at hospital and nursing homes in Minnesota where he is fondly remembered for his quick wit and gentle humor.
Sixty Years
Father Florian Elmer Muggli OSB Father Florian Muggli OSB celebrates sixty years of monastic profession. Father Florian was born on March 15, 1925, in Richardton, North Dakota, and professed first vows on June 14, 1945. For many years Father Florian served as the Treasurer for Saint John's Abbey.
Fifty Years
Abbot Timothy Thomas Kelly OSB
Abbot Timothy Kelly OSB celebrates fifty years of monastic profession. Abbot Timothy was born on April 30, 1934, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and professed first vows on July 11, 1955. Abbot Timothy was the ninth abbot of Saint John's from 1992 until 2000. Since June 22, 2001, he serves as the President of the American-Cassinese Congregation, a federation of twenty Benedictine monasteries.
Father James Tingerthal OSB
Father James Tingerthal OSB celebrates fifty years of monastic profession. Father James was born on July 10, 1934, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and professed first vows on July 11, 1955. In 1997 the Order of Saint Benedict recognized his twenty-five years of service that included positions as Principal for Saint John's Preparatory School and Coordinator of Special Events for Saint John's University. Father James served for three years as the superior of Saint Leo Abbey in St. Leo, Florida, from 2002 until 2005.
Father Jerome Thomas Coller OSB
Father Jerome Coller OSB celebrates fifty years of monastic profession. Father Jerome was born on February 6, 1929, in St. Paul, Minnesota, and professed first vows on July 11, 1955. He earned a doctorate in music composition from Cornell University and has publshed several works of sacred music at Liturgical Press.
Father Roger Kasprick OSB
Father Roger Kasprick OSB celebrates fifty years of monastic profession. He was born on April 9, 1934, in Angus, Minnesota, and professed first vows on July 11, 1955. Father Roger serves as Guestmaster for Saint John's Abbey. Until his retirement last year, he taught theology to undergraduates at Saint John's University for many years.
Father Jonathan Francis Fischer OSB
Father Jonathan Fischer OSB celebrates fifty years of monastic profession. He was born on April 4, 1934, in Strasburg, North Dakota, and professed first vows on July 11, 1955. Father Jonathan taught German at Saint John's Preparatory School and served as the Field Director in Germany for the Hill Manuscript Museum & Library. Presently he serves as a health care chaplain in St. Paul.
Twenty-five Years
Father Robert Pierson OSB
Father Robert Pierson OSB (above left) celebrates twenty-five years of monastic profession. He was born on December 29, 1955, in Estherville, Iowa, and professed first vows on July 11, 1980. Father Robert is the chaplain and head of Campus Ministry for Saint John's University Collegeville.
Brother Kevin Ludowese OSB
Brother Kevin Ludowese OSB (above center) celebrates twenty-five years of monastic profession. He was born on March 1, 1957, in New Ulm, Minnesota, and professed first vows on July 11, 1980. Brother Kevin is the Refectorian for Saint John's Abbey.
Brother David Klingeman OSB
Brother David Klingeman OSB (above right) celebrates twenty-five years of monastic profession. He was born on January 3, 1955, in Postville, Iowa, and professed first vows on July 11, 1980. Brother David is the archivist for Saint John's Abbey and Saint John's University.
