Bishop Ordains Benedictine
Brother Douglas Mullin OSB a Priest

Release Date: July 30, 2007

COLLEGEVILLE, MINN. -- Most Rev. Richard Pates, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, will ordain Benedictine deacon, Brother Douglas Mullin OSB, 52, a Catholic priest, Saturday, August 4, 2007, at 10 a.m. in Saint John's Abbey Church in the presence of Abbot John Klassen OSB, the Saint John's monastic community, family members, friends, colleagues and students.

Mullin was born in Laredo, Texas, September 30, 1954, and grew up in Bloomington, Minnesota, before going to college at Saint John's University. He professed first monastic vows 11 July 1979. He earned two masters: one in Religious Education (SJU, Collegeville, 1982) and one in Elementary School Administration (UST, St. Paul, 1988). In 1997 the University of Minnesota awarded him a doctorate in Educational Leadership. Brother Doug serves as Associate Professor of Education for the College of Saint Benedict and Saint John's University.

Besides holding the position of teacher and then principal at St. Mary's Mission School, Red Lake, MN, from 1982 to 1989, Brother Douglas has held a variety of leadership positions in both Saint John's Preparatory School (Prefect, Dean of Students, Teacher of Math and Religion, Residency Director) and Saint John's University (Assistant to the President, tenured Associate Professor, Department Chair, monastic Regent). In the abbey he served as assistant novicemaster from 1980 to 1981 and as subprior from 1997 to 2003.

Mullin began studies for ordination to the priesthood in 2004, the silver jubilee year of his monastic profession. He completed a third master's in preparation for ordination in August 2006. Bishop Kinney ordained Brother Douglas a deacon January 20, 2007.

During his diaconate, Brother Douglas added dignity and solemnity to the major celebrations of the liturgical year and assisted Abbot John at monastic funerals. He exercised diaconal ministry in the educational apostolate of Saint John's University that resumes in August 2007.

Mullin's hobbies include cooking, bicycling, travel, reading, and computing. Repeated trips to Korea, China, and Japan have improved his skill at preparing Asian food for colleagues, monks, and students.

Father Douglas will celebrate his First Mass on Sunday, August 5, 2007, in the Abbey Church, 10:30 a.m.
