Five Monks Celebrated Anniversaries of Priestly Ordination in 2010

COLLEGEVILLE, MINN. In 2010 five monks of Saint John's Abbey mark significant anniversaries of their ordination to the priesthood. On Wednesday, June 9, 2009, the monastery will formally acknowledge their jubilees at Mass during the Abbey's annual retreat, 11:15 a.m.
65 Years Ordained
Father Fintan Bromenshenkel OSB
Born: 23 October 1918; ordained: September 2, 1945
Fintan's education includes an MS degree in mathematics and two professional certifications in computer science. He wore many hats at St. John's Preparatory School: mathematics and physics teacher, prefect, hockey and football coach, and moderator of the Prep Radio Club. He worked at St. John's University as mathematics instructor, programmer, analyst, director of the Computing Center, hockey coach, and dormitory prefect. His missionary work at St. Augustine's Monastery in Nassau, Bahamas, included work in the business office and computer operations. He was also the assistant to the Capital Campaign Manager at Saint Augustine's, and while there he did weekend pastoral ministry at Bahamian parishes. His interests and hobbies include grub-axing the local shrubbery and weeds.
Father Magnus Wenninger OSB
Born: 31 October 1919; ordained: September 2, 1945
Magnus graduated from St. John's and was ordained to the priesthood in 1945. He completed two MA degrees: one in philosophy and the other in mathematics education.
Much of his pastoral ministry was done in Nassau, Bahamas, where he also taught mathematics and was comptroller/accountant at St. Augustine's College, held the title of Chaplain of Her Majesty's Prison, worked as spiritual director at the Nassau Curia Legion of Mary, and did weekend assistance at many parishes on the Family Islands. His biggest claim to fame is his outstanding and internationally acclaimed work with polyhedrons and other geometrical forms, attested by his many publications in this area.

Father Chrysostom Kim
Born: 16 March 1927; professed: 11 July 1954; ordination 4 June 1960
After completing his undergraduate education, Chrysostom was ordained to the priesthood in 1960. He earned a master's degree (political science) and a PhD (interdisciplinary social thought) from the University of Chicago. He taught social thought and honors at St. John's University, and his pastoral work took him to St. Anselm's Priory in Tokyo where he served as novice master, junior master, and pastor of St. Anselm's parish. He has done pastoral ministry in Central Minnesota at St. Cloud and Cold Spring. Now he describes himself as Author in Residence at St. John's Abbey, and he enjoys, in his own words, "to muse sans cesse in the areas of philosophical, historical, poetic-literary, sociocultural inquiry and occasionally jot down something that I have mused on."
Father Eugene McGlothlin
Born: 8 June 1932; professed: 11 July 1954; ordained: 4 June 1960
Eugene graduated from St. John's University in 1956 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1960. His served St. John's University as campus coordinator, director of the Jobs Placement Bureau, Parents Council Development Office, and registrar as well as faculty resident, coordinator of residence hall programming and summer freshman orientation, and assistant vice president of student affairs. His pastoral ministry extends from Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Minnesota parishes in Hastings, Avon, and St. John the Baptist in Collegeville. He served St. John's Abbey as secretary of the monastic chapter and coordinator of abbey liturgies. As hospital chaplain, he was director of pastoral care at St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center (Duluth) and at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. He served as president of the National Association of Catholic Chaplains.
FatherRoger Botz OSB
Born: 10 December 1933; professed: 11 July 1954; ordained: 4 June 1960
After being ordained to the priesthood in 1960, Roger earned an MA in school administration. He has taught classes in English, reading, math, religion, and science at Colegio San Antonio Abad, Humacao, Puerto Rico, and he also served as the school principal. His work for Saint John's University includes admissions counselor, director of church and civic services (St. John's Abbey and University), director of the Parents' Program, chaplain, and executive secretary of the SJU Alumni Association. His pastoral ministry has largely focused on his position as director of the Spiritual Care Department at the St. Cloud Hospital. His good humor shines through his love of puns.
