The Holtkamp Organ: A Photo Tour of the Organ

Part 3 of 6: The Swell (manual 3, enclosed, electro-pneumatic pitman chests)

Swell Shades
Slats that look like Venetian blinds and can be opened and closed through a foot pedal called the swell shoe. This allows volume control because when the shades are closed, the sound from the pipes behind the blinds can't get out so it will be fairly soft. As the organist opens the shades, the sound gets louder. The shades are normally in front of the division called the swell (The Pipe Organ Glossary).
