Listening Our Way Through Lent
Presented by Mary Stommes, editor Give Us This Day
“The life of a monk ought to be a continuous Lent,” says Saint Benedict (RB 49:1). Many who live outside the monastery might say the traditional 40 days of Lent are enough! As it is, Lent is so demanding and seems much too big for us. Where do we begin? And how can we sustain the Lenten journey? “Listen,” we can imagine Saint Benedict answering, “Listen with the ear of your heart” (RB Prol.).
Sharing her love for scripture, story, and Benedictine spirituality, Mary Stommes will lead us to reflect on listening as a rich and fruitful Lenten practice. If our Lent is a “continuous listening”—to God and to everyday life—then we will more easily recognize the hope and joy of Easter that await at journey’s end.
